HR Fact Friday: Gap in Female vs. Male Income Not Closing

Women in New York state earned a median weekly income last year of $720, or about 84 percent of the $858 earned by men in the state, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday, August 10.

Women in the Empire State fared better than other women across the country, who earned a median income of $657, or 80 percent of the $819 nationwide median income brought in by men. But the gap between male and female salaries in New York did not narrow from 2008, when it reached a record high. The numbers reflect workers in full-time wage and salary positions.

“In terms of women making strides, the ratios haven’t changed a lot in the last few years,” said Martin Kohli, a BLS regional economist. “Women have not been making additional gains in terms of closing the wage gap.”

Wage and Hour Issues at the Spearmint Rhino?

In another example that no organization is immune from Fair Labor Standards Act complaints, several “exotic dancers” at the Spearmint Rhino and other Los Angeles area clubs have alleged that they have not been paid minimum wage and have been misclassified as independent contractors.  The dancers’ made their allegations under the name of the “California Coalition of Undressed Performers.”  That didn’t sit well with the court that found that for the dancers to pursue their case they’d have to provide their real names- no pseudonyms.    No word on how that will turn out.   [Exotic Dancers v. Spearmint Rhino, C.D. Cal.]

HR Fact Friday: Wage and Hour Division Is Hiring

It’s not all bad employment news this week. Nor is it bad news for workers who have a grievance against their employer and plan to file a wage related complaint. The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is hiring . . . in fact they will be adding 250 investigators, a staff increase of more than a third, announced U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis.

Solis made the announcement after the release of a Governmental Accountability Office (GAO) report that found the department’s system for receiving and responding to wage and hour complaints is ineffective and discourages wage-theft complaints.

Of the 250 new investigators, 100 will focus on contractor compliance under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the economic stimulus package.

HR Fact Friday: Women’s Pay Remains Above 80% of Mens

The earnings gap between women and men who work full time grew slightly in 2007, as men’s weekly pay incresed more than that of women, according to figures released recently by the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Among the nation’s 106.1 million full-time wage and salary workers, median usual weekly earnings of women rose to $614 last year, up 2.3%, or $14, from the median of $600 in 2006, BLS said in a report posted on its Web site.  The median is the midpoint, meaning that half of the workers earned more than that amount while the other half earned less.

Men who worked full time saw their earnings climb even more, to a median of $766 per week in 2007, a gain of 3.1% or $23 from $743 the prior year.

As a result, the ratio of women’s earnings to those of men declined to 80.2% last year, down from 80.8% in 2006.
