HR Fact Friday: Employees Ready to Settle Down

Job security takes precedence over advancement as workers manage their own careers, health care and retirements, a Towers Watson survey shows.

The findings, released in the 2010 Global Workforce Study, are from a biennial survey of employee attitudes and workplace trends. Participants were in 22 countries, including the United States.

Among the nearly 1,100 U.S. employees surveyed, job security is crucial, and the recession has prompted workers to lower their career and retirement expectations severely, the survey researchers found. Stability is “paramount,” according to the report, “even at the expense of career growth and development.”

Among the findings for U.S. workers:

  • 40% said working for two or three organizations throughout their careers is the most appealing career model.
  • 39% would prefer to be employed at one organization their entire work lives.

Globally, 81% of all workers are not actively looking for new jobs, and more than three-fourths place job security above everything else, including more pay.

HR Fact Friday: Fewer Men Willing To Be Stay at Home Dad

Working dads continue to explore different options to free up more time with their families, but fewer are willing to leave their jobs if their other half could comfortably carry the financial load for the entire family.

While nearly one-third (31 percent) of 797 U.S. men would give up the traditional role of breadwinner, that percentage has dropped from 37 percent in 2008 and 49 percent in 2005, according to CareerBuilder’s Working Dads 2009 survey.  The survey was conducted in February and March 2009 with men who were employed full time and have children age 18 or younger living at home.

HR Fact Friday: Company Picnic . . . Reality or Myth

Here we are smack dab in the middle of summer. It’s a good time of year. Days are long so there is time in the evenings for outdoor activities, folks are taking or planning vacations, and your company picnic is today so you can look forward to not having to work this afternoon, making a fool of yourself in the sack relay race, sinking your boss with a well aimed throw in the dunk tank, and filling up on free food and drinks. Ah, good times. Or are they?

Here at HRN, the annual summer company picnic is a relatively new event. In the past we have historically put all our eggs in the Holiday dinner event. But a few years ago we branched out and now hold a summer family oriented employee appreciation event as well. They are pretty low key as far as corporate events go. We reserve a pavillion at a local park, have some food, drinks, and ice cream brought in, and hold a variety of fun, family oriented competitive contests. Oh and then there’s the grand finale . . . the prize raffle.

The event is a lot of fun and employees look forward to participating along with their family each year. But this is a rough year economically for many businesses which means all non-essential expenses must be controlled and considered. So, is the summer company picnic taking this year off as cash strapped businesses look for ways to tighten their belt?

According to an online SHRM poll (take the poll by going to: www.shrm.org) that is currently open and accepting votes:

  • 34% of respondents say YES, their company is holding a summer picnic/company event this year.
  • 14% say YES but event is being scaled back
  • 33% say NO, although we have had them in the past, and;
  • 20% say NO, and we have never had a summer picnic or company event

So the data submitted to date supports the assumption that companies are cancelling or scaling back on summer employee events.  Not surprising I suppose. In tough times employees would prefer a job and paycheck over a cold hot dog, a flat soda, or a twisted ankle rounding 3rd base. But if your company is hosting a summer event, attend, appreciate the gesture, get to know your coworkers and their family, and above all RELAX, don’t talk about work and ENJOY yourself.

While the economic crisis is being felt by nearly every segment of the working population, one group of workers is faced with particularly tough decisions regarding their futures. 60% of workers over the age of 60 say they are putting off their retirement because of the impact of the financial crisis on their long-term savings, according to a survey by recruitment firm CareerBuilder.  The survey was conducted among more than 8,000 full-time U.S. workers ages 18 and over between Nov. 12 and Dec. 1, 2008.

President Obama Revises Labor Executive Orders

A recent national SHRM article describes how President Obama has revised some federal labor orders. Here are excerpts from the article:  Two of the orders signed by Obama directly contravene directives signed by [former President George] Bush.

One of Obama’s new directives revokes Executive Order 13201, which required federal contractors to post a notice of nonunion employee rights concerning payment of union dues—also known as the Beck Poster. According to Obama’s order, federal contractors will no longer use the Beck Poster and will be required to post another notice that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) will develop.
