Destination HR: My #SHRM12 Packing List and More Insider Tips

One of my goals this week was to start a list of things I needed to pack for my trip to Atlanta two and a half weeks.  I’d love to be able to tell you that I earned a gold star for that one, but unless a list in my head counts, I failed.  However, I did manage to collect a few more priceless insider tips from Drive Thru HR’s SHRM preview show.

  • The Information Booth is the place to go. – It’s centrally-located, and knowledgeable SHRM staffers are on hand.  It’s the best place to get information while on-site.
  • A game show on-site? Check. -  Visit the SHRM booth and be a contestant for the HR Challenge game.  Yes, there are prizes.
  • It’s okay to hoard. – Keep the information you receive in your conference bag.  The brochure you get in the mail is not the same as the one in your bag.  The brochure in your bag has the room numbers of each session.
  • Have a Plan B (and a Plan C) – Eddice Douglas with SHRM recommends having a back-up plan before you go.  In the conference mobile app, I’ve added several sessions to almost each time slot, and I’ll map them out when I get there.  It’s like that recurring nightmare about the first day of high school, and you don’t know where to go – I don’t want to be “that” person.
  • Southern charm and hospitality await us. – The conference is being held in downtown Atlanta.  The 6-8 block radius surrounding the center is called Lucky Marietta, and boasts plenty of restaurants and night spots.
  • There’s plenty of time to network. – In addition to the Meet to Eat and Meet to Move activities we’ve talked about before, there are other special events going on during the conference.  On Monday and Tuesday, look for Meet to Read from 1-2 p.m. in the SHRM store.  While there’s no speed dating, there is speed networking.

I picked up a few reminders for my own packing list:

  • Business cards
  • Chargers
  • Comfortable shoes – at least two.
  • Extra bag for toting home all that swag
  • Money – bring twice as much as you think you need.
  • Light jacket – While it’s hot outside, it’s cold in the conference center.

Here’s a question: What should I wear?  I’ve heard that the clothing choices really run the full spectrum, but I tend to go middle of the road.  If you have any advice, please share with me.
