New Rule Updates Acceptable I-9 Documents

Filed under: General HR Buzz2:17 pm

The list of acceptable identity documents for the Form I-9 employment eligibility verification process has been updated and takes effect May 16.  The rule, issued by the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), requires that only unexpired documents be presented during the verification process.  It also eliminates from the list of acceptable documents several that are no longer issued by the USCIS.

There are still two versions of the Form I-9 that employers may use – the current version (Rev. 08/07/2009) or the previous version (Rev. 02/02/2009).  For more information, please go to www.uscis.gov/files/form/m-274.pdf.
