Compromise on Tax Cuts and Jobless Benefits in the Works

Senate Republican leadership hinted today on the Sunday news programs that a compromise is being considered that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts.

The tax cuts, which have been in effect for a decade, are set to expire in a few weeks.  Disagreements over who would receive the continued tax cuts and how long the extension will last are the main sticking points.  Without the extension, H&R Block’s Tax Institute estimates that a married couple earning $80,000 would receive $221.48 less in each bimonthly paycheck starting in January, just when Christmas bills show up.

Another extension of jobless benefits, which are about to expire for millions of unemployed Americans, is also being considered.
