2009 Union Membership Declines

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ annual union membership report, private sector unions lost 834,000 members in 2009.

As a result, private section union membership decreased to 7.2% (vs. 7.6% in 2008). Overall union membership, remained about the same, at 12.3%, the result of public sector union membership, which increased by .6%  to 37.4%.

Union membership varies across industries with manufacturing at 11.9%, construction at 15%, and information services hovering around 11.2%.  The transportation and utility sectors have the highest percent of union membership, at 23.4%.
